Consultation FAQs

Marriage, in itself, is a profoundly transformative turning point in life. Chandra Milan (also known as Guna Milan or Ashtakoota Milan), which has traditionally been used during marriage to match the horoscopes of the bride and groom, is an incomplete method of compatibility analysis. Beyond Chandra Milan, we also examine —

Lagna matching or Lagna Maitri, Saptam Bhava matching (7th house matching), Dwadash Bhava (12th house) and Navamsa (D-9) matching — all of which indicate marital harmony, physical compatibility, emotional intimacy, mutual attachment, and overall concord in married life.

Second House (2nd House) milan, Tenth House (10th House) milan, and evaluation of the strength of the Sun (Surya Bala) — which indicate authority, status, stability, and prosperity within married life.

Pancham Bhav (5th house) & Saptamansh (D-7) analysis — which indicate the prospects of timely conception and the birth of beautiful and healthy offspring after marriage.

8th house and Trimsamsha (D-30) analysis — which indicate any possible inauspicious events, accidents, misfortunes, or even widowhood that may occur after marriage.

Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), and 4th house considerations — which indicate wealth, righteousness, prosperity, luxury, continuation of lineage, and overall happiness and comfort after marriage.

Widowhood Yoga (Vaidhavya Yoga), Vishakanya Yoga, Mritvatsa Yoga, and Mangal Dosha considerations, along with the analysis of their cancellation (remedies and mitigating factors).

For future-oriented inclusive compatibility, consideration of Dasha analysis etc. is also taken into account.

When Mars is placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from either the Ascendant or the Moon in a horoscope, it is considered “Mangal Dosha” in astrological terms. In modern times, various software and applications also mark a horoscope as Manglik based on this same criterion; however, this represents only a partial understanding.

Even when Mars is placed in the above-mentioned houses, the negative effects of Mangal Dosha are often nullified or significantly reduced due to the influence of other planets or due to Mars being in special conditions such as its own sign or its own Nakshatra. In this way, simply considering oneself Manglik solely on the basis of Mars being in the above houses reflects a superficial understanding.

Furthermore, there is also an astrological principle that even if Mars is placed in any of the above-mentioned houses (1, 4, 7, 8, or 12), Mangal Dosha is considered to be cancelled in horoscope matching (Melapak) if the prospective partner’s horoscope has Saturn (or, according to different opinions, other malefic planets such as Rahu or Ketu) placed in any of those same houses. In such a case, if all other Guna matching is favorable, the marriage may be considered suitable.

For a harmonious and fulfilling married life, it is considered necessary to obtain 25 or more matching Gunas (points). According to various traditional doctrines and interpretations, if the other aspects of compatibility are highly favorable, some Acharyas (scholars and learned authorities of astrology) may still advise proceeding with the marriage even when 18 or more Gunas are matched. However, Guna Milan alone (also known as Chandra Milan or Ashtakoota Milan) is not sufficient to determine the success of a marriage.

For marital success, beyond the Moon, the mutual harmony of auspicious factors such as the Ascendant (Lagna), Sun, Jupiter, Venus, and other benefic planetary influences in the horoscopes of both the bride and groom is equally important. In addition, the alignment of the relevant houses and planetary periods (Dashas) is also considered an essential aspect.

Nadi Dosha is associated with the health and well-being of the bride and groom. No form of happiness in life is truly possible unless both physical and mental health are sound. When either the mind or the body is unhealthy, every form of happiness becomes meaningless or diminished — let alone marital happiness.

It is for this reason that, within Ashtakoota Milan, the ancient Acharyas assigned the highest weightage of 8 points to Nadi matching, thereby emphasizing its significance. Therefore, the absence of Nadi Dosha is regarded as an essential factor for a harmonious and fulfilling married life.

It is simply not possible to prepare a horoscope merely from a person’s name and date of birth. For accurate horoscope preparation, it is essential to know the date of birth, accurate birth time, and birth place. Therefore, proper Kundli matching cannot be performed using only the name and date of birth.

However, some astrologers claim to perform horoscope matching through the first letter of the name. The basis of this method lies in the fact that, in Indian astrology, specific syllables or letters are assigned to each Nakshatra. Traditionally, in Indian culture, a child’s name during the Namkaran Sanskar (naming ritual) was often chosen according to the Moon Nakshatra. Because of this, the first letter of a person’s name may indicate their birth Nakshatra, and on that basis, Chandra Nakshatra matching is attempted.

Yet, this approach is not practically reliable. In everyday life, the names commonly used are often different from the original ceremonial names assigned during the naming ritual. As a result, attempting to determine someone’s birth Nakshatra merely from the first letter of their name can be misleading.

Even if one assumes that the person’s name is genuinely based on their Moon Nakshatra, this method can perform only Chandra Milan (Moon-based matching). The comprehensive horoscope matching discussed earlier cannot be accomplished through this process. Therefore, claiming to perform complete Kundli matching solely through a person’s name is a rather laughable practice. In matters as important and sensitive as marriage, such an approach reflects serious carelessness and lack of wisdom.

Similarly, modern numerologists may claim to perform “Kundli matching” merely through the date of birth by comparing Mulank (root number), Bhagyank (destiny number), and other numerological values. In reality, however, this is only a comparison of numerical associations assigned to different planetary influences. Such methods may provide limited insights into the personalities, tendencies, or mental compatibility of the bride and groom, but they cannot truly be called Kundli Milan.

In its true sense, Kundli Milan is an extremely comprehensive system involving the study of all major aspects of life, along with the favorable and unfavorable influences of time and planetary conditions upon human behavior and destiny.

In Ashtakoota Milan, Bhakoot matching is considered an important factor for assessing the emotional harmony and loving bond between the prospective bride and groom. The ancient Acharyas assigned Bhakoot Milan the second-highest weightage of 7 points, after Nadi Milan, highlighting its significance in marital compatibility.

It is often observed that when couples in a love relationship approach an astrologer for Kundli matching, some astrologers argue that since the couple is already emotionally attached and in love, Bhakoot Dosha — even if present — may be ignored. However, in my view, nothing in this world is truly permanent.

At a particular point in time, couples may believe themselves to be deeply in love, yet it is entirely possible that they are merely influenced by temporary attraction toward one another. In many love marriages, it has been seen that after marriage, the couple may undergo severe mental stress, conflicts, humiliation, and even separation.

Therefore, in my opinion, whenever a couple approaches an astrologer for Kundli matching, the foremost duty of the astrologer is to conduct a thorough and objective analysis of the horoscope-based combinations, strengths, weaknesses, and probable outcomes, and then truthfully convey only those results and possibilities that genuinely appear likely in the future life of the couple.

If the Doshas are mild, appropriate remedial measures should be suggested. If the Doshas are severe and indicate a strong possibility of misfortune or serious marital distress after marriage, the couple should be cautioned accordingly and guided with sincerity and responsibility.

Marriage is one of the most important and sensitive turning points in human life. Therefore, Kundli matching must be performed with utmost seriousness, depth, and dedication; and only after ensuring the greatest possible harmony and good fortune should a couple be advised to proceed toward married life.
